The Green Bay Packers added Kyle McCord early in the offseason, signed Kyron Drones as an undrafted free agent following the draft and then brought in veteran Tyrod Taylor in an effort to replace backup quarterback Malik Willis, who signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency. But could the Packers use a unique pathway to add another player to the quarterback room?
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is expected to enter the NFL’s supplemental draft after he was ruled ineligible for the 2026 season due to gambling on college and professional sports. While his eligibility became an on-going legal issue, Sorsby eventually decided to apply for the supplemental draft, which allows NFL teams to bid a 2027 draft pick for the player.
Where could Sorsby land? ESPN’s Ben Solak believes the Packers are the top fit for Sorsby — who he compared as a player to Willis — in the upcoming supplemental draft.
From Solak: “In that Sorsby reminds me of Willis, I am unsurprisingly interested in his potential with LaFleur in Green Bay. The Packers’ current QB2 is Tyrod Taylor, whom they signed after the 2026 draft. I’d wager they wanted to snag a quarterback in that draft, but the board never fell their way. The QB3 is Kyle McCord, who doesn’t at all fit the mold of a Packers backup quarterback; they’ve typically prioritized athletes, such as Willis and Taylor, at that spot. Sorsby would likely beat out McCord for the QB3 role and be first in line for QB2 after Taylor’s one-year deal expires in 2027.”
Solak also listed the Minnesota Vikings as a possible landing spot.
Sorsby is raw as a passer but has an intriguing combination of size (6-3, 235) and athleticism, much like Willis coming out of Liberty in the 2023 draft. Solak believes Sorsby has a “live arm” and “seriously impactful acceleration” as a quarterback, although his mechanics get sloppy and his accuracy is concerningly inconsistent. The Packers eventually acquired Willis for a late-round draft pick, developed him into a dangerous backup quarterback in Matt LaFleur’s system and allowed him to leave for a starting opportunity in Miami. There is proof of concept, at least.
Solak’s idea is simple: Despite a late arrival in Green Bay, Sorsby would slide in as the team’s designated third quarterback behind Taylor and Jordan Love, and with a year of development, could then take over as Love’s backup in 2027. However, Solak also sees Sorsby as a second-round talent who will likely command no less than a third-round pick to win in a bidding scenario.
The Packers will be loaded with draft picks in the 2027 draft, so it’s certainly possible the team is considering using one on a talented player at the game’s most important position. While Taylor provides a one-year stop gap, Sorsby could be the long-term solution. And a potentially valuable future asset.
Of course, spending any resource on a player with a major gambling red flag entering the NFL is a big risk. Rules on betting are strict, and betting on NFL games can come with a one-year suspension. The Packers have a relatively stable quarterback situation at this point, so the team could have no interest in throwing the whole room into chaos by adding a distraction like Sorsby into the mix late in the process.
Sorsby is expected to have a pro day for NFL teams on July 10. All 32 teams are expected to attend.
