As the biggest splash for the Chicago Bears in free agency this offseason, safety Coby Bryant will undoubtedly be tasked with plenty of responsibility on the field for the defense, but also to be a leader in the locker room for the entire team.
Bryant, who signed a three-year, $40 million contract this offseason, comes over from the Seattle Seahawks, where he won a Super Bowl championship last season. Now, he looks to bring that championship pedigree to his new franchise with second-year head coach Ben Johnson.
While Johnson’s arrival to the organization last season rejuvenated the Bears and propelled them all the way to the NFC divisional playoffs, the team is looking to build off of that success in his first year and make a real impact in 2026. Last week during minicamp, Bryant spoke about his new head coach, the fire that Johnson coaches with and how it fuels him as a leader for the team.
“I love it, honestly. He’s filled with fire,” Bryant said. “He’s an offensive guy too, as well, but we have a lot of similarities hence that’s why I’m here. He’s a true competitor, every day he competes. He’s like us talking junk to him and vice versa, he talks junk to us too (on defense), I match his energy every day and vice versa. It’s been a special offseason.”
That fire that Johnson coaches with is something that had been missing over recent history before he arrived, where the players on the team had to call for more accountability from previous coaching regimes as they struggled on the field. With the championship experience that Bryant brings on the field and the energy that Johnson brings as a head coach, the Bears have multiple leaders who can help bring this team to their ultimate goal of a Super Bowl championship.
