These one-way roads in Iowa City are getting protected bike lanes

Local bicyclists may soon have a bit of extra room on a pair of Iowa City’s busiest one-way roads.

The Iowa City City Council approved a pilot project on Tuesday, June 16, for protected bike lanes on Dodge Street and Governor Street, with installation expected this fall.

The project will install flexible posts and a small curb to separate the bike lane from traffic along Dodge Street between Brown Street and Market Street, and along Governor Street between Brown Street and Jefferson Street.

Both streets are one-way that run parallel to each other in opposite directions.

Construction is expected to begin in late July and finish by the end of August at an estimated cost of $150,000.

City Manager Geoff Fruin said feedback will be valuable in determining how to use protected bike lanes around high-traffic areas. He said staffing for snow removal will be the biggest obstacle.

Standard city plows will continue to clear Dodge Street and Governor Street; however, specialized snow-removal equipment used by the parks department to clean trails and sidewalks will be used on the protected bike lanes.
