Decision on condo project again postponed in Saugatuck Township

A controversial development has been placed on hold again, following the cancellation of a meeting of the Saugatuck Planning Commission on June 16.

The Enclave, a proposed condominium development on Old Allegan Road, has been a topic of discussion for several months. A decision on the rezoning request from C-1/R-1 to Planned Unit Development was initially tabled in January, then postponed in March and April.

The development would include a multi‑unit building, attached single‑family homes and detached single‑family homes on 9.13 acres at 6549 Old Allegan Road. The project would have two-, three- and four-bedroom layouts.

Residents have questioned whether the project’s scale is appropriate for the parcel, and whether proposed setbacks are sufficient. Saugatuck Township has received numerous letters opposing the development.

The topic was included on the posted agenda for June 16, but the meeting was cancelled due to a “lack of business” June 15.

Saugatuck Township Zoning Administrator Lynne Wells said developers are taking additional time to review and modify their “parallel plan,” so it meets code requirements and wetland setbacks.

Wells expects The Enclave will return before commissioners later this summer. The body next meets at 6 p.m. July 21.
