Trevor Johnson steps down as Randall basketball coach

After an athletics career that spanned 14 years at Randall, including the past two in which he headed up the boy’s basketball program, Trevor Johnson stepped down Tuesday to accept a job as the principal at Claude High School.

“I didn’t expect that job to come open, but when it did — they approached me and it’s kind of weird how God opens doors for you,” said Johnson, who was approved in a board meeting Tuesday night. “It felt like it was the right move at the right time.”

During that span with the Raiders, Randall was an assistant for 10 years under the late Leslie Broadhurst before being promoted to take over the program for the past two years. In 2024, Broadhurst retired after 36 seasons and was the only boys basketball coach Randall had ever had.

In his two years as the head coach, Johnson helped the Raiders advance to the regional championship game and regional semifinals, respectively, in Class 4A Division II. Randall finished with a 31-5 mark in Johnson’s first year, but ended 15-21 in his final campaign, via Maxpreps. District play included a 24-4 tally, aided by a 14-0 record in his first season.

“We had a really young team and really started peaking at the end of the year and made it all the way to the regional semis,” Johnson said of his 2025-26 squad, which he broke the news to Wednesday morning. “We were just really happy with how those guys played this year.

“And it was a really tough conversation with our players. We want to grow these guys as players, but also as men at the same time. So, we were real with them. I let them know that when you’re married with kids and the opportunity comes around that gives you more time with them and allows you to have more experiences with them. That was hard to down. I hated having that goodbye talk.”

With the change in roles, Johnson will be able to work and live in Claude — which is a 30-minute drive outside of Amarillo. Both of his children attend school and the athletics program is something he’s watched from afar as it’s grown into a contender.

“Really excited about going to Claude, it’s a small 1A school, but I feel like it’s a school on the rise,” Johnson said. “There’s a lot of really good things happening, really excel in academic UIL stuff, band and every sport except one made the playoffs this past year.

“Ready to jump in and keep things rolling for Claude ISD.”
