Fire returns to Fond du Lac home damaged in March 5 blaze

FOND DU LAC – A fire in the attic of a vacant multi-family home on East First Street caused minor damage Tuesday afternoon, June 16, in Fond du Lac, according to Fond du Lac Fire Rescue.

Crews were dispatched at 4:49 p.m. to 166 E. First St. for a reported structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they found light smoke coming from an attic vent on the back of the two-story home.

Firefighters entered the building and found several small, smoldering fires in the attic, which they quickly extinguished. A search of the building found no occupants, and no injuries were reported.

The home had already been heavily damaged in a March 5 fire and has remained vacant since then after being deemed uninhabitable, officials said.

Fond du Lac Fire Rescue credited a neighbor who spotted smoke from the attic vent and called 911, saying the quick report likely prevented the fire from spreading and causing more damage.

Fond du Lac Fire Rescue investigators and Fond du Lac police detectives are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
