What to know if you're going to Milwaukee’s Juneteenth celebration

Milwaukee’s Juneteenth celebration is just days away.

Nicole Goins, co-chair of the Milwaukee Juneteenth Jubilee Parade, told the Journal Sentinel that organizing the June 19 parade takes a lot of work, and with some participants coming from out of state, she expects this year’s celebration to be memorable.

“There’s a plethora of things to do,” Goins said. “You can’t get bored. You won’t get bored on Juneteenth day.”

When and where is Milwaukee’s Juneteenth parade?

The parade starts at 9th Street and Atkinson Avenue. It heads east, then turns south on King Drive to Burleigh. The parade will feature Miss Black America, marching bands, floats and dance teams.

It starts at 9 a.m. Friday, June 19 and will be broadcast live on TMJ4. It’ll last for about two hours.

And the parade is only the start of the celebration, Goins said. A block party after will feature a veterans’ zone, kids’ zone and more than 500 vendors. That means petting zoos, rides, food and artwork.

Goins said there is increased security at this year’s event to keep everyone safe.

What is the Juneteenth weather forecast in Milwaukee?

The National Weather Service has a clear forecast on Friday. It’s calling for a sunny day with a high near 75. Winds will peak around 10 miles per hour. No rain or sweltering heat is expected.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth commemorates the events of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when the last Black slaves of the Confederacy were ordered free following the arrival of Union troops, USA TODAY reported.

In Milwaukee, Juneteenth is celebrated with a variety of events, including “parades and festivals featuring live music, dance performances, and delicious cuisine, to educational workshops and historical exhibitions,” according to the event’s website.
