The Chicago Bears have no shortage of weapons on offense heading into the 2026 season, but tight end Colston Loveland might just be the biggest playmaker in Ben Johnson’s scheme and quarterback Caleb Williams’ favorite target.
Loveland, selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, was one of the most exciting rookies last season. While it took him a few weeks to get going, Loveland led the Bears in receptions (58) and receiving yards (713), showcasing his receiver-like separation and pass-catching ability. In the final 12 games of the season (including two postseason contests), he caught 59 passes for 790 yards and six touchdowns. He also set an NFL rookie record with the most receiving yards in a single postseason with 193 yards in two playoff games.
But if you thought Loveland’s mini-breakout was the peak, there’s plenty more on the way in Year 2. So it’s no surprise that ESPN’s Matt Miller dubbed Loveland as one of five second-year players primed for a big breakout in 2026.
Chicago’s offense is suddenly flush with young, talented pass catchers, but it’s Loveland who could be its breakout star. He was on fire at the end of last season, recording 26 receptions for 370 yards and two TDs in Chicago’s final four games (including the playoffs). Loveland was at times the focal point of coach Ben Johnson’s offense, which should continue in 2026 — especially with wide receiver DJ Moore now in Buffalo.
But don’t just take it from NFL analysts. Head coach Ben Johnson recently spoke about Loveland’s work ethic and overall potential to thrive in this offense. And after listening to Johnson tease that there’s more to come for the young tight end in Year 2, it’s worth taking notice.
“He’s one of the most consistent players I’ve been around. And that’s saying a lot for a young guy,” Johnson said during minicamp. “… I’m really happy with where he’s at right now. We’ve been able to take the route tree to the next level and it’s something we’re going to continue to develop in training camp as well.”
