The St. Clair County Health Department’s (SCCHD) Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) Program is informing residents that new federal income eligibility guidelines took effect on June 1, making it possible for more families to qualify for assistance. The updated guidelines are part of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and apply to Michigan residents.
WIC is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that helps eligible families purchase healthy foods using a Michigan WIC EBT card. USDA is an equal opportunity provider, employer, and lender.
Benefits can be used at participating grocery stores and pharmacies to buy approved foods such as milk, yogurt, eggs, whole wheat breads, fresh fruits and vegetables, and infant formula.
Individuals may qualify for WIC if they are:
- Pregnant
- A new parent who has had a baby (or been pregnant) within the past six months
- Breastfeeding a baby younger than 12 months old
- A baby, child, or foster child under age 5
“The St. Clair County Health Department’s WIC Program provides much more than food benefits,” said Becki Hartman, Public Health Nursing Supervisor. “Participants also have access to nutrition education, breastfeeding support, referrals to healthcare providers, high-risk nutrition counseling, immunizations, and supplemental foods. If someone previously applied and did not qualify, now may be a good time to contact us to see if the new income guidelines make them eligible.”
