TPD: Another parking lot gathering ends with shots fired, bloodshed

An early-morning shooting outside Sharkey’s Lounge left two men wounded Monday, marking the latest flare-up in a recent string of gun violence in Tallahassee.

The Tallahassee Police Department said that at around 1:53 a.m., officers in the area of the 2800 block of Sharer Road heard several shots coming from the front of the business.

As officers approached, one man was found to have been shot twice. Another man was found further in the parking lot also suffering from a gunshot wound.

Both men sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

Preliminary findings of the investigation indicate a large crowd was gathered in the parking lot before the shooting occurred.

The latest shooting, which is a part of a rash of gun violence involving a group of people and multiple victims, remains under investigation. It took place in the same parking lot that was the site of a fatal shooting in early May outside Pockets Pool and Pub.

When officers arrived, they found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police said officers attempted life‑saving measures, but the man died from his injuries at the scene.

So far this year, 10 people have been killed and 25 injured in at least 26 serious shootings in the capital city and Leon County, according to a Tallahassee Democrat analysis of gun violence that tracks incidents involving injury, death or a clear risk of serious harm. Ten of those injured and one fatality have come in the span of two weeks.

A day before the shooting outside Sharkey’s, three people were shot June 7 in south Tallahassee after a fight escalated into gunfire. At about 2:56 a.m. Sunday, the Tallahassee Police Department responded to a call at the intersection of South Adams Street and Rudy Hubbard Way (formerly West Osceola Street). TPD Watch Commander Damon Miller said officers found three adults suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds outside of a business called Da Spot.

On June 4 at about 4 a.m., TPD responded to “a shots fired” call at the Marathon Gas – Skyline Express in the 1100 block of West Orange Avenue. Two victims with non-life threatening injuries reported to the hospital and an additional victim with a gunshot wound to the hand showed up at the crime scene.

On May 23, gunfire erupted at an “unsanctioned pop-up party” at about 5 a.m. in a Tallahassee parking garage near the student apartment complex Legacy Suites on Chapel Drive.

An 18-year-old Georgia student with a bright future who graduated a day earlier was killed and two others sustained non-life threating injuries. Family say Gavin Yates-Lyons, the Lowndes County High School graduate who finished high school early and was attending college at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, was caught in the crossfire.

At this time, no arrests have been made and there are no suspects. This remains an open and active investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call TPD at 850-891-4200 or Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS.
