Heartbreaking loss should not overshadow USC’s remarkable season

On Sunday, the USC baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 walk-off loss to North Carolina in Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional. With the defeat, the Trojans’ season came to an end.

Obviously, the loss was a heartbreaking one for the Trojans. As we wrote about, it will haunt USC fans for quite some time.

However, the brutal ending should not take away from what the Trojans accomplished this season. USC won over 40 games for the first time in more than two decades. The Trojans racked up 19 consecutive victories to open the year and went 32-1 at Dedeaux Field.

Last week in College Station, USC won a regional for the first time in 21 years, dominating No. 12 national seed Texas A&M on consecutive nights. Then, against North Carolina, the Trojans pushed the No. 5 team in the country to the brink, giving the Tar Heels all that they could handle.

Just four years ago, USC finished in last place in the Pac-12. Head coach Andy Stankiewicz has returned this program to the national spotlight and gotten people invested once again.

The Trojans are not where they want to be quite yet. But they took a massive step in the right direction this season. While the ending was heartbreaking, this team deserves to be celebrated for that.
