Quarterback Russell Wilson officially announced his retirement from football this week in a heartfelt video on his social media account, thanking the fans.
Wilson will be joining CBS Sports in the studio this fall after 14 seasons in the NFL. The question now is, where does he stand in the pantheon of NFL greats? Is he a Pro Football Hall of Famer?
Wilson ended his career last season with the New York Giants, beginning the season as their starting quarterback. He was replaced by rookie Jaxson Dart after Big Blue got off to a 0-3 start. He ended up appearing in three more games later in the year.
The Hall of Fame talk surrounding Wilson is sure to surface, but he may have to wait a little bit as there are several quarterbacks backed up on the Canton tarmac at the moment, such as the 2004 NFL draft big three (Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, and Philip Rivers).
Fans will be miffed if Wilson gets in before Manning, but that situation could resolve itself as Manning could get the call before Wilson is eligible in 2030. Here’s a quick comparison of the two players:
The disrespect to Manning aside, there is a strong argument for Wilson to eventually find himself in Canton.
