Angela and Ray Dimmick owned a coin and collectibles store in Yuba City for many years before they decided to retire and move to Palo Cedro.
Then they bought the former Jose Antonio’s property on Hartnell Avenue in Redding in December 2024.
There, the married couple recently opened Garden Gate Emporium and Silver Dollar Emporium.
Angela said they saw the Hartnell property, a former nursery and garden center, and “jumped on it.”
“We didn’t realize it needed this much work until we were involved in it,” she said.
The heart of the two business is a garden that features a large sitting area, fountains, koi ponds, all shaded by trees where Angela hopes people will stop by and hang out.
“They can just come in and hang out for free. We’re going to have a coffee cart; we are hopefully going to have a wine bar,” she said.
Garden Gate Emporium features collectibles, home accessories, and children’s clothing.
“We used to buy estates in Yuba City … and then we bought a lot of businesses that closed down, like Joann’s and Party City. We went in and bought a lot of their items, so that way people have a place to buy it again,” she said.
Ray runs Silver Dollar Emporium and describes the business as “unique.”
“You don’t generally run into a coin shop that has coins in it like this. We got a lot of rare coins; we got 14 years of doing this,” he said.
Rare?
“Low mintage. Everyone likes the key dates. Carson City Dollars, for instance. We’ve got probably a hundred Carson City Dollars in here. So there’s a lot of neat coins,” Ray said. “We didn’t start making coins in the US until 1793. Those early ones are hard to find and few and far between, but I’ve had several of those coins come into my hands.”
More details about future of this recently purchased downtown building
Last November, Riley and Cassandra Breslin purchased the 1490 Market St. building in downtown Redding.
About two months after they purchased it, Riley Breslin told me they will move their Sensory Innovations business there and planned to open a community wellness center and a play café.
Well, recently signs went up in the front of the building announcing what’s to come: The Grove Café & Playspace.
“The Grove Cafe and Playspace will have a coffee bar serving: coffees, healthy elixirs, and small bites. The play place will consist of a fox den play structure (shown on the banner and is also the basis for the playing foxes logo) as well as a climbing structure. There will also be a smaller play area for toddlers,” Riley Breslin said in an email.
He did not know the expected opening date.
“We are almost through plancheck with the COR (city of Redding) so hopefully (we) will have more information soon, but we are still targeting the end of summer,” he added.
In February, he said they purchased the building because they wanted to move downtown “to help accomplish our mission of creating a truly inclusive space for families with all needs.”
Ultimately, the Breslins plan to occupy the entire building, which is approximately 6,000 square feet. Sim Nathan’s Shoes, which operated for nearly 70 years, once called the building home.
Shop Around the Corner Books on the Butte Street side of the Breslins’ building recently moved to California Street next door to Theory Coffee.
