CANTON ‒ A police dog bit and injured a fellow city police officer on the night of June 4 during the foot chase of a suspect who was wanted in connection with two alleged crimes of violence, records show.
The incident that led to the officer being bitten on the arm began at Mallonn Memorial Park, 527 Raff Road NW, when police tried to serve a warrant on a 33-year-old man from northeast Canton who was wanted in connection with a March 18 shooting.
The suspect ran through the neighborhood, according to the police report.
After the wanted man jumped the fence at a residential property in the 300 block of Montrose Avenue NW, one officer dropped the leash on his K-9 partner and gave the command to apprehend the fleeing suspect. He wrote that he did not give a K-9 warning because of the suspect’s warrants for violent offenses and his actions during the pursuit.
The officer wrote that he had not been able to see the other officer in the path the dog would take to get to the suspect, nor was the injured officer there when he initially entered the back yard.
The report says that K-9 Tom bit the officer on the right arm and was physically removed from the bite. A tourniquet was placed on the officer’s arm. He was taken to Aultman Hospital in a cruiser.
The suspect surrendered to another officer about 10 yards away. He was taken to the Stark County Jail.
A June 10 status conference is to be held in Canton Municipal Court on the charges of obstructing official business, resisting arrest, inducing panic and criminal damaging or endangering from the June 4 case, and the charges of felonious assault and criminal damaging from the March 18 incident.
The police chase that resulted in the officer being bitten was reported at 9:27 p.m.
