Butler basketball coach Ronald Nored is adding former Alabama point guard Andrew Steele to his staff as the Bulldogs new director of player development, replacing former Butler star Aaron Thompson.
Steele replaces Thompson after the former Butler point guard took over as Butler’s director of player development on April 13. Three weeks later, Thompson reversed course and returned to George Washington where he spent the last three seasons as its director of player development. Thompson is taking an expanded role as an assistant coach with the Revolutionaries.
Steele will work Butler’s basketball players on the court in individual and team skill development, and provide administrative, instructional and coaching assistance to Nored.
Steele started his coaching career at his alma mater, John Carroll Catholic in Alabama, in 2013. He became an assistant coach at South Alabama in 2016, most recently working as an assistant at North Alabama last season.
Steele played in 94 games in four seasons at Alabama. He was a team captain during the 2012-13 season.
“I’m really excited to have Andrew join our staff and be part of what we are building here at Butler,” Nored said in a news release. “He played at a high level and has gained great coaching experience over the last decade. Andrew is a tremendous relationship-builder and our players will enjoy working with him as he pushes them and develops them into the best versions of themselves.”
Steele joins a staff featuring holdovers from former coach Thad Matta’s staff general manager/assistant coach Tony Bollier and assistant coach Jon Diebler, along with newly hired assistant coaches Kotie Kimble (Furman), Jalen Courtney-Williams (LSU) and former Butler player and assistant coach Emerson Kampen.
