TxDOT gets approval for SL 335 safety improvements near Arden Road

Traffic crews have gotten the green light for road work with State Loop (SL) 335, which will improve safety around Arden Road near West Plains High School.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Amarillo office said Thursday, June 4, that it has received approval to move forward with the construction of the main lanes on SL 335, extending from north of FM 2186 to north of Arden Road.

What’s being built?

Along with the main lanes, the $47 million safety improvement project includes the construction of an overpass at Arden Road, traffic signal lights at Arden Road, high-mast lighting and shared-use paths.

When is it expected to start?

The SL 335 project is scheduled for bids in August, with construction anticipated to begin in early winter.

Originally anticipated for 2030, the construction project has been advanced to 2026 due to proactive efforts and the availability of funding, TxDOT Amarillo said.

Safety concerns rose after student was hit in crosswalk

The agency said the primary focus of this project is to enhance safety and mobility in the area for the traveling public.

In June 2025, a West Plains High School student was leaving campus on foot when they were struck by a vehicle while crossing Loop 335 (Helium Road) in the crosswalk.

Following the accident, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) were placed along SL 335 near the school zone, and an extensive signal light warrant study determined the need for more traffic lights in the area.

TxDOT urges all motorists to drive with caution and reduce speed through all work zones.

Projects are subject to change due to weather, emergency work and other unexpected events.
