It’s a new month, and communities around Northern Michigan are celebrating the start of summer with several fun events.

Here’s what we recommend:

Start your summer reading

Libraries across the region are launching their summer reading programs, with a wide range of activities for kids, teens and adults.

For example, the Petoskey District Library is hosting Messtival from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 5 to kick off their summer reading. The evening includes a juggling performance, ice cream treats and a chance to pick up the Summer Reading activity booklet.

Registration is also open at the Indian River Area Library for its summer reading program. The theme this year is “Unearth a Story” and features plenty of dinosaurs. Don’t forget to check out Dinosaur Day on June 22 with PaleoJoe!

Be sure to stop in to your local library to see what summer fun they have scheduled.

Hear a Michigan Notable Author

John Counts, author of “Bear County, Michigan” will make a Michigan Notable Author Tour stop at the Boyne District Library on Saturday, June 6.

Starting at 11 a.m., the event will have coffee and brunch refreshments provided by the Friends of the Boyne District Library.

Registration is required to attend and space is limited.

Explore Public Safety Open House

The Petoskey Department of Public Safety will host its annual Public Safety Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

The popular summer event includes free hot dogs and drinks, as well as a gift for kids.

Agencies who will be in attendance are CCE Central Dispatch, the Department of Natural Resources, the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Emmet County EMS, the Little Traverse Bay Bands Tribal Police, the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, the Michigan State Police, North Flight Aero Med, Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Task Force, the Emmet County Office of Emergency Management and the Resort-Bear Creek Fire Department. A wide variety of safety equipment and vehicles will be available for people to get an up-close look.

Join summer celebration in Petoskey

The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council is hosting a Summer Celebration at the Watershed Discovery Center in downtown Petoskey.

The free, family-friendly event takes place from 12-2 p.m. on Saturday, June 6. The day includes live animals, educational exhibits, children’s crafts and more.
