A man is dead after being shot by West Chester Township police, according to township officials.
Officers were called around 9:50 p.m. on June 4 to an apartment complex on Zinnia Court after a resident reported a woman screaming for help inside a neighboring apartment, officials said in a news release.
When police arrived at the apartment, the release states, they knocked on the door, announced their presence and made their way inside out of concern for the residents’ safety.
Officers were performing a “protective search” of the apartment when they encountered a man inside a bedroom, officials said, and a shooting took place. It’s currently unclear what prompted police to use their service weapons or how many officers opened fire.
The man, whose identity hasn’t been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were seriously injured during the incident.
The township has requested that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. Officials say the investigation is ongoing and additional information is forthcoming.
