A 22-year-old man was arrested and booked into the Brevard County jail early Thursday, June 4, following reports of a shooting that left a man dead in the unincorporated area of Cocoa.
The suspect, identified as Terrance Skinner Jr., was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the Wednesday, June 3, fatal shooting of Xavier Carroll, jail records show. The sheriff’s office reported that Skinner and Carroll had gotten into a verbal confrontation, and that Skinner pulled out a firearm and shot Carroll in the front yard of a home.
The incident happened about 6:20 p.m. in the Brophy Street area. Brevard County Fire Rescue paramedics treated Carroll at the scene; then transported him to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A large presence of sheriff’s deputies was seen at the site, with residents taking to social media to describe the incident. Skinner was located near the residence and taken into custody.
The fatal shooting is the sixth reported homicide to take place in Brevard County since. Jan. 1.
Skinner remains held without bond at the Brevard County Jail Complex.
