1. IS IT LEGAL: To have a license plate frame in Florida?
Florida officials have put the word out: Your license plate frame is probably OK.
For weeks now, drivers with a little bling on their rides have been worrying if their license plate frame is suddenly illegal under a new Florida law that went into effect Oct. 1, adding harsher punishments for anything that obstructs the plate starting with up to a $500 fine, up to 60 days in jail, or both.
Various police departments and sheriff’s offices around the state have spoken up on social media to explain. The Florida Sheriffs Association reassured everyone that their own branded license plate frame was fine.
The law was intended to stop tinted covers that could make plates hard to read under certain conditions. It also takes aim at devices that are specifically intended to obscure identification by law enforcement by flipping, blurring or hiding the plate.
Critics of the new law worried that it would be used as another excuse to pull over people of color or potential immigrants. – C.A. Bridges/USA TODAY Network-Florida
2. SAMARITAN AMONG 3 KILLED ON I-75: Driver stopped to help, was struck in crash
A Good Samaritan was among three people killed along Interstate 75 in Collier County early May 31, state police say.
The crash happened shortly before 4 a.m. when a box truck traveling south on I-75 near the Pine Ridge Road exit drifted off the road. The truck then veered back onto southbound lanes and overturned, blocking the center and outside lanes, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.
The truck driver, a 31-year-old Naples man, suffered minor injuries and exited the truck. A 25-year-old Naples man driving a BMW stopped at the crash scene and exited his car to help the truck driver.
At the same time, a 20-year-old Naples man driving a 2023 Tesla was heading south on I-75, approaching the truck and BMW driver who was standing outside.
The Tesla struck the underside of the overturned truck and the BMW driver. Two Tesla passengers — two Naples men, ages 18 and 19 — were pronounced dead at the scene, FHP said.
The BMW driver suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
The Tesla driver and two other passengers — Naples men ages 19 and 20 — suffered serious injuries and went to a hospital. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and also was taken to a hospital.
The wreck closed the southbound Pine Ridge Road exit for a few hours.
The crash remains under investigation.
