U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson won the Republican nomination for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat, besting former state Sen. Jim Carlin in the June 2 primary.
Hinson, of Marion, will face Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek and Libertarian Thomas Laehn in the Nov. 3 general election.
Hinson, 42, is serving her third term in Congress, where she represents northeast Iowa’s 2nd District. She won her first term in 2020, defeating a Democratic incumbent to flip the seat to Republican control, and won reelection in 2022 and 2024.
Before she was elected to Congress, Hinson served two terms in the Iowa House and previously worked as a television news reporter and anchor in Cedar Rapids.
Hinson was the heavy favorite for the Republican nomination. She enjoyed a large fundraising lead over Carlin as well as the endorsement of President Donald Trump, Gov. Kim Reynolds and retiring Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst.
Hinson and her husband, Matt, have two teenage sons. On the campaign trail, she often describes herself as a “minivan driving mom.”
She launched her campaign promising to be Trump’s “top ally in the United States Senate.” She regularly touts her vote for Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” which included tax cuts on tips and overtime pay.
In Congress, Hinson serves on the Appropriations Committee, Ethics Committee and Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
