George Eastman Museum adds photo reservations for shoots

Anyone looking to book a photo session at the George Eastman Museum should be aware of this new policy.

The museum announced on June 1 a new policy on taking photographs on their property. Museum officials described how the historic landmark has grew in popularity as hundreds of people come to take photos for senior pictures, proms and balls, graduations, engagements and other special events.

Why Eastman Museum changed its photo policy

As stewards of a National Historic Landmark, officials said they are committed to preserving the museum as its historic gardens are being restored, with improved accessibility, at an investment of more than $2 million.

Officials also noted that many professional photographers who have not made prior arrangements are disrupting visitors’ enjoyment of the property.

Fees and rules for photo sessions at the museum

Under the new policy, a pre-approved paid reservation is required for all paid professional photography on the museum’s property.

Unpaid non-professional photography for proms or balls require a pre-approved paid reservation. Special-event photography outside of museum hours also require a pre-approved paid reservation.

Visitors who are casually taking photos are allowed as long as the photography is not set up in a way that disrupts other visitors’ experience.

Reservation fees remain unchanged with one hour outside for $400 and one hour in the mansion for $600.
