Butler, 46, was killed on Saturday, May 30 in the 700 Block of East Swain Road. The medical examiner’s office said Butler was an unhoused man from Stockton.

On the day Butler was killed, Stockton police officers responded to the scene for reports of gunshots. Butler was found by officers suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he died from his injury, police said.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin their investigation.

Officer Omer Edhah, a Stockton police spokesperson, said a motive for the shooting and suspect information could not be released as of Monday due to the information being confirmed.

Butler’s death marked the city’s ninth homicide of 2026, compared to 17 homicides at the same time last year.
