Law enforcement officials said they shot and killed a man after he wounded a Polk County sheriff’s deputy in a confrontation while authorities were serving a warrant at a Johnston home.
Deputies assigned to the sheriff’s office mental health unit and U.S. marshals went to the home in the 5700 block of Linden Court on Monday, June 1, and were trying to serve the warrant when the man ran into a garage and barricaded himself inside, sheriff’s Lt. Mark Chance told the Des Moines Register.
Chance said officers tried to communicate with the man, who had started a fire in the garage, and persuade him to surrender. When they attempted to enter the garage, the man fired at them, striking a deputy in the hand.
Multiple officers returned fire, wounding the man, who later died at the scene, Chance said.
Chance said the Johnston-Grimes Fire District, which already was at the scene to assist, extinguished the fire. It was contained to the garage.
Authorities have not released the man’s name or details about the warrant.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation, Chance said.
The deputy’s injury was not life-threatening and he was taken to a hospital for treatment, Chance said.
