Cast your vote for Monroe County Region Athlete of Week May 25-31

It’s back-to-back for baseball.

After failing to have a Monroe County Region Athlete of the Week winner for the first seven weeks of the season, baseball has produced the champ the last two weeks.

Ida’s Hunter Hemelgarn topped the May 18-24 poll with 9,355 votes.

He came out on top of a spirited week of voting that saw five athletes finish with more than 1,000 votes.

Alivia LeBrun of Jefferson’s softball team was second with 5,661 followed by Logan Mitchey (Ida boys golf) 4,864, Kyle Burger (Bedford boys lacrosse) 3,550 and Lola Cacioppo (Monroe girls soccer) 1,738.

There were 29,123 votes cast.

It’s time to cast your vote for the May 25-31 winner.

Voting will continue through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, June 4.

Here are this week’s candidates in alphabetical order:

Olivia Beaudrie, SMCC girls track and field: Soared to a Division 3 state championship in the high jump and helped the Kestrels place fourth in the 400 relay.

Christian Craanen, SMCC boys track and field: Helped the Falcons win a state championship by placing second in the 3,200, third in the 1,600 and sixth in the 800.

Steel Decator, SMCC baseball: Did not give up an earned run against the highest-scoring team in Division 3 to pitch the Falcons to a district championship.

Maddi Duke, Bedford boys track and field: Placed fourth in Division 1 in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 1:53.87 and helped two relays place 10th.

Cam Fairchild, Dundee baseball: Allowed just four hits and no earned runs to spark a win over Ida in the district quarterfinals.

Emi Grube, Jefferson softball: Went 3-for-3, drove in three runs and combined with Jalee Leach to toss a no-hitter in a district quarterfinal game.

Taleon Guess, Bedford boys golf: Shot a round of 73 to qualify for the state finals.

Julia Hughes, Ida girls track and field: Captured state title in the high hurdles, placed third in the lows and ran on two relays in the Division 3 state finals.

Reece Kalb, Summerfield baseball: Yielded just two hits in the first game as the Bulldogs repeated as district champs.

Reese Knox, Milan softball: Drove in the typing run in the district semifinals, then collected four hits and three stolen bases in the championship game.

JT Lemert, Summerfield boys track and field: Placed fourth in the state in the discus with a school-record toss of 153-0.

Carson Liedel, Monroe baseball: Racked up six hits, including four in the final against Bedford, to lead the Trojans to a district championship.

Brooklyn Martin, Airport softball: Rapped out three hits in each game and earned both pitching wins as the Jets won the Division 2 District they hosted.

Aubrey Miller, Erie Mason softball: Cracked her first varsity home run in a win over Milan.

Lincoln Murbach, Erie Mason boys track and field: Dropped his school record to :39.55 in taking second in the low hurdles at the Division 3 state finals and also was 16th in the highs and 16th in a relay.

Giuliana Nastale, Erie Mason girls track and field: Repeated as state champion in 100 and 200 meters, took 10th in the 400 and ran on a 10th-place relay.

Lily O’Dell, Ida softball: Went 4-for-4 in a doubleheader sweep of Monroe.

Brea Olmstead, Summerfield softball: Tossed a 2-hitter in the semifinal and struck out 13 in the final as the Bulldogs won a district championship.

Brek Ruddy, Whiteford boys track and field: Cleared a school-record 14-6 to take third in the pole vault in the Division 3 state finals and ran a leg on a fourth-place relay.

Brayden Siders, Airport boys golf: Carded an 80 to help qualify for the state finals as a team.

Miley Skamiera, New Boston Huron girls soccer: Produced two goals and an assist in a victory over Airport in the district semifinal, then netted a hat trick in the championship game.

Addison Skinner, Gibraltar Carlson softball: Racked up five hits, including a home run in the final, and was the winning pitcher in the championship game as the Marauders won a Division 1 District title.

Jackson Surma, New Boston Huron baseball: Didn’t give up any earned runs in the championship game of the Division 2 District at Airport and helped his own cause with three hits and two RBIs.

Gavin Swartout, SMCC boys track and field: Came into the state finals seeded 23rd, but captured third place and helped the 400 relay take first with a state-record time.

Peyton Welch, Whiteford softball: Gave up just one run, didn’t issue a walk and struck out 22 in a pair of district wins.

Connor Zimmerman, Ida boys golf: Recovered from a quadruple bogey on the first hole to earn a trip to the state finals.
