See which Muskingum Valley stars clinch state track bids

Regional track and field meets commenced at various high schools across the region this past week, which marks the final stop before the state meet.

The addition of a fourth and fifth division to the rotation changed the qualifying format, with the top five finishers in each event at three regionals earning state bids, along with three statewide wild card spots.

The state will be held June 4-7 at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

Here is a look at each qualifier.

Division II

Sheridan, Tri-Valley and Zanesville trekked some 2 1/2 hours for the regional at Troy High School, where 35 schools were represented from the Southweest, East and Southeast districts.

Division III

Muskingum University hosted athletes representing 41 schools from the East, Central, Southeast and Southwest districts.

River View was seventh of 41 teams among boys schools with 32 1/2 points, where Columbus Hartley set the pace with 66. Maysville was fifth in the girls meet with 36, while Athens, led by distance ace Sofia Szolosi, won with 66.

Division IV

East District teams were sent to Austintown Fitch, in suburban Youngstown, where qualifiers from 67 schools were represented from the East and Northeast Districts.

Running event state semifinals, other than the 3200 and 4×800 races, will be held at 1 p.m. on June 4 and the finals at 2 p.m. on June 5.
