If anyone needs a bounce-back year more than Cleveland Browns’ Jerry Jeudy, I’d be very surprised. So, for him, a fresh reset under a new coach and new playcaller is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Also, a positive for him is that “everything is different about this offense.” Those words came directly from Jeudy after the Browns’ Thursday OTA practice, where he was asked what was different about Todd Monken’s offense compared to the prior regime.
His exact quote went like this, “Yeah, the offense, the concepts, the everything… Everything is different about this offense, the playcalling, the concepts. I’m used to different. I deal with different changes every year of my career. That’s no big (deal).”
Jeudy didn’t stop there; he added some salt to the wound. He continued by saying, “He (Monken) does a great job of getting to the best plays. Being able to give the quarterback the ability to change the play to get in the best formation, the best concept against certain defenses and certain looks is just going to help us.”
A lot to unpack here. First, this is exactly what Browns fans have come to expect from Todd Monken. Everything that has been said about him as a play caller is that he fits his offense to his players, not the other way around.
It’s not to say that one way is better than the other way; it is to say that this way gives him and his team a lot more confidence because he is going to call plays that they know they are good at. Simple as that.
The second part of these comments is the apparent autonomy that the quarterbacks have at the line of scrimmage. Every quarterback has some level of clearance to change plays and make audibles. Rarely is it so publicly known and publicly offered that it is not just a luxury for these quarterbacks, but it is the expectation that they adjust the offense to get it into the right look.
That is refreshing to hear because Monken is challenging his quarterbacks from as early as possible to make changes at the line of scrimmage to put the offense in the best position to succeed. The fact that many are speaking on it means that it is the expectation and the standard for Cleveland’s signal callers.
The third takeaway from these comments is what the truth was about the last regime? How bad was it actually for these guys, and how much of a mess did it become? That answer may never come to light, but it is comments like this that really make you wonder what it was actually like last year.
A new regime is coming in at the perfect time for Jerry Jeudy, who desperately needs a great season. Thankfully, this year’s offense is going to be different than the last couple of years.
