Lately, Luka Doncic has been building a robust life outside of basketball for himself. Earlier this season, he briefly left the Los Angeles Lakers to witness the birth of his second daughter, and he recently decided to forgo representing his native Slovenia this summer in order to spend time with his family.
He is also now part of an ownership group that just purchased Vanoli Cremona, a pro basketball team in Northern Italy. But Doncic is still keeping the main thing the main thing. Per Tania Ganguli of the New York Times, he reiterated that winning the NBA championship with the Lakers is still his top priority.
“Obviously I’ve started thinking a little bit,” Mr. Doncic said. “But I’m a Laker, and winning the championship right now is the most important thing for me.”
The Lakers went 53-29 this season, and they got swept in the second round of the NBA playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder after Doncic suffered a season-ending hamstring strain on April 2. Virtually no one thinks the Lakers currently have a championship-caliber roster, but they may not be far away from having one, especially after they ripped off 16 wins in 18 games right before Doncic’s injury.
The superstar guard averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 1.6 steals a game this season and finished fourth in the MVP balloting. He signed a three-year contract extension with Los Angeles last August, and he can opt out of that contract in the summer of 2028.
