Top coach suggests his team to play Notre Dame if Texas opts out

Notre Dame seems to unintentionally get their name thrown around in a rivalry in the lone star state.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has proposed to step in if the rival Texas Longhorns choose to opt out of their upcoming series versus the Fighting Irish.

McGuire made the offer Thursday at the Big 12 spring business meetings, in response to recent comments from Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte that the 2028 and 2029 games against Notre Dame are only “tentatively” on the schedule. Those words cast significant doubt on whether the series will eventually take place, with Texas facing a deadline of Sept. 9 to cancel without incurring a $500,000 fee.

“I saw a comment by [Del Conte] that he’s not sure if Texas is going to play Notre Dame in ’28 and ’29. We need a ’28 and ’29 game too because Mississippi State back out on us, so we’ll take that game if they want to get out of it. If Texas doesn’t want to play Notre Dame, we would love to play Notre Dame in ’28, ’29.”

The last time Texas Tech faced off versus Notre Dame was in 1932, when the Irish won 39-0. However, there could be a potential budding rivalry as coach McGuire was very vocal last December in criticizing Notre Dame and telling them that if they want to be in the playoffs, they should join a conference.

Notre Dame has yet to respond to the bickering between the two Texas school rivals.
