Much like the NCAA Super Regional, the Texas Longhorns are already on the brink of elimination at the Women’s College World Series. The Horns lost to Tennessee 6-3 in the opening game of the WCWS and must now stay perfect in order to get to the championship series.
The Vols struck first off Texas ace Teagan Kavan. Tennessee’s Elsa Morrison hit a three-run homer to center field off Kavan to give the Lady Vols a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
The Vols extended their lead over Texas to 4-0 in the fifth inning thanks to a wild pitch from UT pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez scoring Taelyn Holley from third base.
The Horns got on the board in the bottom of the frame thanks to a fielders choice and an error that scored Taylor Anderson. But UT missed a big opportunity to cut into the lead even more.
Tennessee quickly regained a four run lead on a single by Gabby Leach to score Zoie Shuler from second base.
UT hit a two-run homer in the sixth to cut the lead to two. With two outs, Leighann Goode hit a two-run homer off Tennessee’s Karlyn Pickens to cut Texas’ deficit to 5-3. But the Vols padded the lead in the seventh and that was the game.
