Track and field – Check out the Section 9-A championship results

The Section 9 Class A track and field championships will be hosted by Monroe-Woodbury High School on Thursday, May 28.

The Monroe-Woodbury girls posted 150 points to outdistance Valley Central (122) and Pine Bush (72). The Warwick boys (142) are on the verge of topping Monroe-Woodbury (105) with one event left.

In the boys meet, Warwick’s Luke Beattie became a triple winner in the 100-meters with a meet-record 10.65 seconds – he broke the 1993 hand-adjusted winning time of 10.74 by Middletown’s Dave Simmons, and became first triple winner since Justin McCollin of Monroe-Woodbury (2008-10).

Warwick’s Leo Shostal won the 3,200 (9:37.86) and 3,000 steeplechase (9:46.63), the first such double since Monroe’s Mike Hannon in 2018. Monroe’s Anthony Lanari was a repeat winner in the shot put (50 feet, 4.5 inches; best winning throw since 2016). The pole vault win by Klaus Lindenau extended Warwick’s win streak to five years.

Warwick won the 400-meter relay (43.20) for the first time since 2003. Likewise, the Valley Central 1,600 squad (8:05.03) won for the first time since 2004.

Valley Central’s Dayna Scott was a triple winner, setting a meet mark in the 200 meters (24.39 seconds) – breaking the 2004 hand-adjusted mark of 24.74 by Latoya Shippy of Middletown – to go with wins in the 400 (57.92) and repeat effort in the triple jump (35 feet, 4.5 inches).

Monroe-Woodbury’s Molly Connolly set a meet record in the 100-meters (12.23 seconds), breaking a 2019 mark of 12.31 by Kingston’s Samara Herzog.

Monroe’s Olivia Heim became a triple winner in the 3,000 (10:33.15). Valley Central’s Jillian Kendrick repeated as high jump (5-0) champ, as did Kingston discus thrower Tiffany Hajba (129-6; best winning mark after 2004).

The Middletown girls 400 relay (49.13) was a repeat winner. Warwick won the 1,600 relay for the first time since 2010, and the 3,200 relay won as well.

The Class B meet will be hosted by Rondout Valley on Friday, May 29. The The Class D championships were held at Monroe-Woodbury, on Wednesday, May 27.
