DEC cracks down UTVs, ATVs driven in Allegany County state forest

Forest Rangers from the Department of Environmental Conservation are cracking down on the illegal use of ATVs and UTVs on state lands.

On Monday, May 25, Forest Rangers conducted an ATV/UTV detail at Klipnocky State Forest in northeastern Allegany County to curtail recent illegal ATV/UTV use.

The detail halted riders out on Memorial Day weekend and Forest Rangers issued nine tickets for illegal UTV use, according to the DEC.

While the use of UTVs and ATVs has grown in popularity in many rural areas, state officials cautioned that the vehicles are not authorized on state lands in DEC’s Region 9.

Klipnocky State Forest covers 2,734 acres across the towns of Almond, Birdsall and Burns. Klipnocky borders both Slader Creek State Forest and Gas Springs State Forest.

The UTV/ATV detail was located in the town of Almond, according to the DEC. Klipnocky State Forest is open for recreation year-round for approved activities like hunting, fishing, hiking, primitive camping, crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

DEC Forest Rangers respond to a variety of incidents across the state.

“We’re fortunate to have them patrolling State lands and keeping people safe,” DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said. “Their expertise and professionalism are valuable assets, not only in New York, but around the country wherever emergencies arise.”

DEC encourages residents to call 833-NYS-RANGERS if a Forest Ranger is needed for a search and rescue, to report a wildfire, or to report illegal activity on state lands and easements. For urgent assistance, call 911.
