With no trade in sight for Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Anthony Richardson, he will be competing with Riley Leonard for the backup role, head coach Shane Steichen announced on Wednesday.
The Athletic’s James Boyd pointed out that Richardson was the first quarterback up in the team portion of practice, but Steichen said afterward that at this stage of the offseason, no one is in the lead.
Richardson and Leonard will have to win the backup role this summer.
Jones took part in the individual portion of practice on Wednesday.
For what it’s worth, considering that the players are still in shorts and there is no contact, ESPN’s Stephen Holder posted that Richardson looked “really good,” throwing a “couple of dimes.”
Richardson requested a trade in late February, but his market was described as “soft” by Adam Schefter. The Colts also want to ensure that they are getting a fair return for Richardson, the former fourth overall pick, who is still just 23 years old.
So for now, Richardson remains with the team, competing for the backup role. A strong showing this summer, particularly during the preseason, could help facilitate a trade.
The 2026 season is the final year of his rookie deal.
