Florida State softball junior shortstop Isa Torres capped a record-breaking season by being named the D1Softball National Player of the Year on Wednesday, becoming the first Seminole to earn the honor.
Torres joins Lacey Waldrop, Jessica van der Linden and Darby Cottle as Florida State players to win a national player of the year award from any outlet, but is the program’s first recipient from D1Softball.
The standout shortstop delivered one of the most dominant offensive seasons in school history. Torres hit .530, breaking her own program record and posting a mark that ranks among the top 15 in NCAA history.
She paired that average with a career-high 16 home runs and 56 RBIs, as her home run total tied for the sixth-most in a single season at Florida State. Only Maddie O’Brien and Jessi Warren have hit more in a season for the Seminoles.
Torres also rewrote the school record book, setting new program marks in on-base percentage (.591), slugging percentage (.978) and runs scored (78). She recorded 98 hits, the second-most in school history, and established an NCAA record with 16 consecutive hits in 16 at-bats from March 8-20. During that same stretch, she reached base in 23 consecutive plate appearances, the third-longest streak in school history.
Defensively, Torres was just as steady. She did not commit an error in her first 164 chances at shortstop and finished the season with only two errors in 184 total chances.
With her combination of historic offensive production and near-flawless defense, Torres not only earned national recognition but also cemented her place among the most accomplished players in Florida State softball history.
FSU’s postseason ended in the Tallahassee Regional after losing to UCF. The Seminoles finished the year 52-10 (21-3 in the ACC).
