An 18-year-old Panhandle resident died in a head-on crash that left another injured in Potter County early Tuesday, authorities said.
Around 5:51 a.m. May 26, a 2016 Ford F150 was traveling north in the southbound lane of State Highway 136, south of El Rancho Road, when it collided head-on with a 2017 Ford Fusion that had been traveling south, according to a preliminary investigation released by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The F150 caught fire after impact, and Good Samaritans pulled the driver from the vehicle as the fire began. Elias Shane Kincanon, 17, of Amarillo was taken by ambulance to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Fusion, identified as Tori Dakota Bunch, 18, of Panhandle, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries she sustained during the crash.
DPS said both drivers had been wearing seatbelts, and both vehicles sustained significant damage.
Following the head-on crash, a secondary crash occurred when a southbound vehicle struck the back right quarter panel of the F150. DPS said no injuries were reported in the secondary crash.
The road was closed in the morning while first responders worked at the scene. Weather conditions were cloudy, with dry pavement and a 70 mph speed limit.
The crash remains under investigation.
