Rural Leon County to get high-speed internet from Comcast

Comcast is bringing high-speed internet to the Chaires community and rural parts of Leon County. Construction will continue over the summer to expand the network to more than 3,200 additional locations in rural areas and roughly 100 previously unserved homes and businesses in Chaires.

The new access is part of a public-private partnership with the state of Florida’s Broadband Opportunity Program — a competitive reimbursement grant initiative through the Florida Commerce Office of Broadband that was created to expand broadband Internet service to unserved areas. In Leon County, the additional rural areas are Miccosukee and Woodville. Construction should be complete by the fall.

“Access to fast, reliable internet is no longer a luxury, it’s how people participate in everyday life,“ Leon County Commission chair Christian Caban said in a statement. “This expansion helps close the digital divide in our rural communities and continues our commitment to ensure every family, student, and small business in Leon County has a fair shot to succeed in today’s economy.” Residents can visit Xfinity.com/mytown and enter their addresses for additional details on construction timing and upcoming service availability, according to the company. Kristeen Cominiello, regional senior vice president of Comcast Florida, said the company is proud to build a new fiber network to “bring fast, reliable Internet to Leon County communities that simply have not had it.”

“For many families, this will be their first experience with this level of connectivity, unlocking new opportunities for education, jobs, small businesses, and staying connected to loved ones,” she said in a statement. “We’re excited to expand Xfinity and Comcast Business services and help more people fully participate in today’s digital world.”
