Not the real version, but the rubberized variety.

If you’re a Subaru owner and you’re looking for a community, Moo Moo Subaru might be for you.

Moo Moo Subaru? What are we talking about?

Moo Moo Subaru is all about spreading a little joy from one Subaru owner to another through little rubber cows. See a Subaru you like and let the owner know by leaving a cow and a note referencing the Facebook group, Moo Moo Subaru, on the hood or in a bag on the door handle or windshield wiper.

Why does that sound vaguely familiar?

It’s kind of like Jeep ducking, also known as Duck Duck Jeep, where fans leave rubber duckies on Jeeps they like. That’s why you might see a line of them, sometimes in a variety of outfits or colors, on a Jeep Wrangler dash. It’s a way of saying, “Nice Jeep.”

If getting a rubber duckie on your Jeep has a name, that probably means there’s a name for this?

It’s called getting mooed and, like its Jeep predecessor, it’s become something of a mooovement, with Subaru owners sharing ideas and stories about their experiences on social media and highlighting more products, like decals and stuffed bovines, that can, as the Subaru campaign goes, help “share the love.” Fans buy bags of little cows to pass out.

How did it start?

It began with the launch in 2023 of the Facebook group, Moo Moo Subaru, which sprang from a conversation. Staci Huckins was asking her friend, Crystal Hamann − they lived in different parts of New Hampshire − about ducking, and Huckins joked that Subaru owners needed something, too. So she came up with cows, she told the Free Press in 2023. She noted that “moo” happens to rhyme with Subaru. The effort took off and other similarly focused groups sprang up, too.

Anything else?

Huckins learned something as she considered what to use instead of ducks — that the Subaru logo, with stars on a blue background, actually represents a part of the Taurus constellation, according to Subaru. Seeing the connection to the astrological bull, she chose the cow.
