Happy Sunday is an event-based culinary experience from Detroit chef Tyrrell Hutchins. The next dinner will honor the history of Juneteenth with a multi-course meal that reflects the traditions that influence Black cuisine in modern times.
Set for two seatings on June 14 at Freya, Hutchins and his team will present “Our Story, Our Table,” several dishes that aim to spark conversation about Black cuisine in America.
Presented by chef Hutchins and Dominique Hutchins, Happy Sunday is an ongoing dinner series that is “a modern interpretation of the African diaspora through food.” The June event, the Sunday before Juneteenth, is designed to center culture, connecting and storytelling as guests gather around the table to reflect and learn.
“Happy Sunday was created with the goal of building immersive dining experiences that go beyond food,” Dominique Hutchins tells The Detroit News.
“Our focus is on creating a space where guests can slow down, connect and experience culture through thoughtfully curated menus and atmosphere,” she said. “At its core, it’s about community, storytelling, and honoring the richness of Black American cuisine in a luxury, intimate setting.”
Seatings will be 4 and 8 p.m. on June 14, and the immersive, three-hour dinner costs $135 per person. The menu is a surprise, and because of the nature of the event, guests who have dietary restrictions should understand that the chef’s ability to make modifications will be limited.
