LAFAYETTE, IN — Police said two teenagers wrecked a stolen car early Friday just a few miles from the apartment complex where they took the car.
Michael Dewayne Green, 19, of Fort Wayne, and Henrick Otto Nichols, 18, of Lafayette, were jailed after the wreck, police said.
The car’s owner reported the theft about 11:35 p.m. Thursday. The 2017 Subaru Outback was stolen from the 3800 block of Burberry Drive, police said.
GPS tracking led police to an area behind a business on Fortune Drive, where property from the car had been tossed out, police said.
A short time later, police found the car near Creasy Lane and South Street and tried to stop it, but the driver fled, police said. It crashed a short time later behind a nearby U-haul facility.
The driver and passenger ran from the scene, but they didn’t make it outside the police perimeter, where officers caught Nichols and Green, according to police.
Officers jailed Green on suspicion of intimidation on law enforcement, resisting law enforcement, auto theft and possession of a stolen handgun found in the car, according to police and jail records.
Nichols is suspected of auto theft, resisting law enforcement, criminal trespass, and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle.
The two remained jailed Friday morning, according to jail records.
