SOUTH BEND — A 19-year-old faces charges of battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness, accusing him of a May 18 shooting at South Bend’s Laurel Woods Apartments.
About 11:15 p.m. Monday, May 18, the South Bend Police Department responded to the 800 block of West Laurel Woods Court on a report of a shooting. Officers found a female victim, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to police. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police reported tracking the suspect to a nearby building, where they detained Jamal Leonard.
The SBPD Violent Crimes Unit says Leonard claimed self-defense, but that video from the scene suggests Leonard was the one to initiate gunfire.
Leonard was being held at the St. Joseph County Jail, according to the release.
