Aaron Glenn’s defensive vision is already taking shape with Jets

The New York Jets were one of the NFL’s most disappointing defensive units last season. That sentence would have sounded absurd not long ago, but reality does not care about reputations.

New York finished near the bottom of the league defensively, and once the offseason began, it became obvious that significant changes were coming.

Now, thanks to veteran defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, Jets fans may have their clearest glimpse yet into what Aaron Glenn’s new vision actually looks like. The head coach made one thing crystal clear earlier this year at the NFL Combine. The defense is his.

“First and foremost is how I’m going to be with the defense, and I will be the playcaller. To me, play-calling is my superpower. I did it (for) four years in Detroit, and man, just look at the maturation of how we improved every year and how I improved as a playcaller. I really missed doing that, and I think it’s a huge part of helping us become the team that I and Mouge [GM Darren Mougey] see and that [owner] Woody [Johnson] sees us becoming.”

That is not vague coach-speak. That is ownership. Now comes some supporting evidence. Thank Mr. Phillips for offering some behind-the-scenes access.

Head coach Aaron Glenn has already taken ownership, and his players are responding.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini caught up with Harrison Phillips at the United Way New York City Gridiron Gala. There, we learned Phillips has already taken a Jets newcomer under his wing. Cimini also asked the huge nose tackle about Aaron Glenn. Je was very complimentary about Coach piecing together the building blocks to put players in the best position to be successful.

That is, in a word, interesting. A more flexible Jets defense may be coming. Read between the lines, and Phillips appears to be describing a more adaptive system. Rather than forcing players into rigid assignments, Glenn’s staff may be building around what defenders actually do well. That would be a welcome development.

Phillips also revealed he is learning every position across the defensive front, a sign that versatility will matter. If Glenn’s “superpower” delivers the same results it did in Detroit, the Jets’ defense could look far less like last season’s frustration and much more like the identity this new regime promised.

That’s what everyone is hoping for. If this works, the Jets won’t simply be better defensively in 2026. They may finally become the type of aggressive, adaptable unit opponents spend all week dreading.
