Yes, Canton has a curfew. City issues reminder to kids and parents

CANTON ‒ As summer approaches, the city is reminding residents and visitors about its nighttime curfews for people who are age 17 and younger.

“As the school year comes to a close, we want to remind both parents and young people about the importance of following the city’s curfew ordinances during the summer months,” Police Chief John D. Gabbard said in a prepared statement.

“The safety, health and well-being of our youth remain a top priority. Curfew laws will be actively enforced, and both juveniles and parents may be held accountable for violations.”

The city imposes restrictions for minors who are out and about beginning at 11 p.m., and at 9 p.m. in a Designated Outdoor Refreshment area, or DORA. DORAs are in downtown and the Hall of Fame Village.

Canton City Council approved the nightly curfew of 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. in 2022 after Canton police reported an increase in juveniles involved in violent crime.

What are Canton’s curfew restrictions for minors?

Here are the restrictions in effect for minors in the city:

Minors are prohibited from loitering, idling, wandering or being in public places or vehicles within city limits between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless they are:

Minors are prohibited from being in a DORA between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless they meet the same exceptions.

Parents, guardians or custodians are responsible for ensuring that minors under their care do not violate the curfew regulations. Failure to do so may result in citations.

All Canton laws about curfews can be found on the Law Department website.

“My hope is for everyone in the Canton community to enjoy a safe and positive summer,” Public Safety Director Andrea M. Perry said in a prepared statement. “The city’s curfew ordinances are in place to support that goal by giving parents and young people clear expectations. Officers will be actively monitoring for violations, contacting families, educating the public, and issuing citations when appropriate.”
