Suspect arrested and charged in weekend South Bend shooting

SOUTH BEND — A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a weekend shooting at a local gas station Sunday, May 17, according to a press release sent May 19 by the South Bend Police Department.

About 6:45 p.m. Sunday, SBPD responded to reports of shots fired at GoLo Gas in the 1900 block of South Miami Street. Upon arrival, the press release said, officers found a male victim with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation by SBPD’s Violent Crimes Unit identified Manuel Moncayo III, 48, as a suspect, according to South Bend police.

Moncayo was taken into custody in Mishawaka the following day, May 18, with assistance from the St. Joseph County Metro SWAT Team, Mishawaka Street Crimes and the Mishawaka Police Department, according to the release.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office charged Moncayo with the following: 

Moncayo is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail, according to the release.
