Gov. Greg Abbott on taxes, Gina Hinojosa on schools in Texas governor race

Incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott is addressing rising property taxes by securing support from 88 Republican incumbents and nominees for the Texas House.

Abbott released the property tax pledge as part of his reelection campaign. In a statement, he said the lawmakers have committed to backing his five-point property tax reform plan.

“Texans are one step closer to the biggest property tax overhaul in state history,” Abbott said. “As of today, we secured enough support from Texas House Republicans and nominees to deliver lasting property tax relief for Texas homeowners.”

He noted next legislative session he will push for policies to “empower taxpayers and end the cycle of local governments relentlessly hiking property taxes,” Abbott said.

Gina Hinojosa rallies voters on education concerns

Democratic candidate for Texas governor Gina Hinojosa took aim at Abbott’s record on education.

The Dallas voter rally on Saturday, May 16, where she decried Abbott’s record, drew hundreds of community members to a block party. She outlined her agenda of lowering costs, strengthening public schools, and rooting out “Greg Abbott’s corruption,” she said.

“We have over 100 schools all across this state that are shutting down – 15 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, at least – despite the fact that we pay so much in taxes. When I am governor, we will do the bidding of the people of Texas and not the billionaire donors,” she said.

Hinojosa, alongside local community leaders, heard from voters about issues including rising costs of gas, groceries, healthcare, and utilities.

She noted Abbott continues to “prioritize private donors over Texas communities,” she said.

Recent independent polling by Texas Public Opinion Research shows the race within 5 points, with Hinojosa winning independents, moderates, Latinos, and every key demographic Abbott needs to hold.
