Muncie man formally charged with murder, attempted murder

MUNCIE, IN — A Muncie man accused of shooting three people, one fatally, was formally charged on Monday, May 18, with murder and attempted murder.

Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman’s office filed a total of 10 charges against 21-year-old Rylynn J. Davis.

The murder count — which in Indiana carries a maximum 65-year prison term — stems from the May 10 shooting death of Davis’ 23-year-old girlfriend, Cheyenne Raines, outside the home they shared in the 2700 block of South Walnut Street.

Davis is also charged with kidnapping, criminal confinement, domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury and domestic battery over his dealings with Raines in the minutes before her death.

According to an affidavit, Raines was trying to leave the Walnut Street home when Davis ran after her, struck her and began to drag her down the sidewalk by her feet.

Davis told Muncie police he also took the handgun later used in the shootings from Raines after striking her in the face.

The affidavit said Raines, “with numerous gunshot wounds in the face, chest, abdomen and back,” was pronounced dead at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

Two local men — Jeremy D. McKee, 39, and Michael J. Hennessey, 40 — were driving past the scene when they stopped and “confronted him on what he was doing,” Davis told police.

Investigators said Davis shot both men, McKee in the head and Hennessey in the abdomen.

Davis is charged with attempted murder, a Level 1 felony carrying up to 40 years in prison, in McKee’s wounding, and aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony with a maximum 16-year sentence, in both men’s shootings.

Davis — being held without bond in the Delaware County Jail — is also charged with neglect of a dependent.

Police found three children — ages 3 years, 2 years and 3 months — locked in a room in the South Jefferson Street home. They were described as “covered in dirt and feces,” and the room they were in was said to be “in deplorable condition.”

Court records reflect no prior charges against Davis. An initial hearing in his case has not yet been scheduled.

Hoffman’s office also filed a sentencing enhancement that could add to Davis’ prison term should he be convicted of any of the charges stemming from shootings.
