Summit County Sheriff's captain to argue self-defense in domestic case

A Summit County sheriff’s captain criminally charged in a Stark County domestic violence case is expected to argue he was acting to protect a teen relative and had no intention of causing physical harm when he intervened during a mental health crisis.

A notice of self-defense filed in Stark County Common Pleas argues Joshua Bolinger was being actively assaulted as he sought to restrain the youth from self-harm.

Bolinger, represented by attorney Jonathan Sinn, is charged with endangering children, domestic violence and three counts of strangulation, according to court records. Bolinger is on unpaid administrative leave from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, where he has worked since at least 2006.
