Baseball

Field 5, Cloverleaf 4

After the Colts took the lead on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning, the Falcons rallied to victory (and a share of the Metro Athletic Conference title).

First, Caden Kolesar came on in relief and coerced an inning-ending fly to left with the bases still loaded to minimize the damage in the top of the eighth.

Then, trailing 4-3, Sam Confer got the bottom of the eighth off to a strong start, lining the first pitch of the inning to right for a double. Caden Corbett and Kole Siedler followed with a walk and infield hit, respectively, to load the bases. Cloverleaf ace Walker Smith responded by getting two straight outs — on a strikeout and short fly — before hitting Alex Williams with a pitch to bring the tying run home. Kolesar then followed with a bases-loaded walk to walk it off for Field.

In a game that started a month prior and was resumed in the bottom of the fifth, Confer went 3 for 4 and scored two runs. Siedler also recorded three hits — and tossed out a potential base stealer to end the top of the seventh — while Kolesar additionally reached base three times with a single and two walks and drove in two runs.

Eleven different players recorded a hit for Southeast, while Devyn Miller and Noah Thorndyke combined on a one-hitter with a whopping 10 strikeouts in five innings of work.

Dalton Braybon had the lone hit for Waterloo.

Division VI Northeast 3 sectional final

Mogadore 5, East Canton 2

Down 2-1, the Wildcats erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure a sectional title. Tali Bartholomew, Embry Hudak and Jayden Miller had two hits apiece for Mogadore, with Morgen Smith and Miller each recording a double. Bartholomew earned the complete-game win for the Wildcats, allowing two runs and striking out 10 batters.

No. 10 Mogadore will next host No. 15 Loudonville in a May 18 district semifinal.

Division V Northeast 1 sectional final

Rootstown 13, Berkshire 10

In a battle of Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division co-champs, the Rovers held on late. Rootstown built an 11-3 lead, scoring three-plus runs in the first, second and fifth innings. Morgan Giebel went 4 for 4 with a homer, three runs and five RBIs out of the cleanup spot. That was one of five homers for the Rovers, with Sophia Byers, Cheyenne Cutright, Kaitlyn Hammerschmidt and Katie Sisley each adding a homer. Cutright and Sisley also had a double apiece while Lilly Kamenash had two doubles. Hitting right behind Giebel, Hammerschmidt had four RBIs meaning the Rovers got nine RBIs out of the four and five spots in their lineup.

No. 11 Rootstown will visit No. 8 Triway in a May 18 district semifinal.

Division V Northeast 2 sectional final

Southeast 10, Columbiana 4

Down 2-0, the Pirates tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second, then added a run apiece in the third and fourth before exploding for six runs in the sixth. Neena Truex went 3 for 4 with a double, while Lilly Hayes, Bella Mowery and Bailey Morris added two hits apiece for Southeast. Morris scored a game-high three runs for the Pirates while Morgan Muncy drove in a game-high three runs. Liv Bragg earned the complete-game win, limiting the Clippers to two runs over the final six innings.

Division VI Northeast 4 sectional final

Springfield Local 11, Waterloo 4

Two three-run homers by the Tigers proved too much for the Vikings to overcome. Leading 1-0, Springfield erupted for four runs in the third, highlighted by a Giuliana Battaglini three-run homer. An inning later, Waterloo understandably chose to issue an intentional walk to Battaglini. The next hitter, Gina Romeo, responded with a three-run homer of her own to give the Tigers an 8-0 lead. Jolean Hampton hit the third three-run homer of the game to help get the ninth-seeded Vikings back in it, but ultimately No. 14 Springfield maintained its advantage and will face No. 8 Columbia in a Division VI district semifinal.
