An initial investigation indicates Vasquez was seen speeding northbound on University Avenue, running a red light at the intersection on 50th Street, before striking the southwest corner of the apartment building in the 2400 block of 44th Street, the release states.

Two Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers were near the intersection of 50th and University and saw the speeding vehicle. They had not yet begun to pursue it before the vehicle crashed. They arrived at the crash site and gave first aid to Vasquez, who was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center where he died.

No one inside the apartment building was injured. Other factors contributing to the crash were not immediately clear as the investigation is ongoing.
