After a wave of mysterious posters, a projection on Ohio Stadium and a drone show that’s all fueled rampant speculation among fans, Columbus alt-rock-pop duo Twenty One Pilots has announced what they are calling the biggest U.S. headline show of the band’s career.
Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, the minds behind the Pilots, will perform a hometown stadium show at Ohio Stadium – fondly known as The ‘Shoe – on Oct. 17, with support from indie rock group Death Cab for Cutie, according to a press release.
The band acknowledged teasing the big news with “a grassroots campaign” that paid tribute to some of the local venues the Pilots have performed at over the last 15 years and culminated with a drone show above the stadium.
Fans can sign up for artist presale now through May 17 at 10 p.m. General public sale begins May 22 at 10 a.m.
This news should satisfy countless of the duo’s fans, who’ve spent the past few days trying to decode cryptic red-and-yellow banners reading “FROM HERE,” along with the band’s logo, that have been plastered on the windows of several music venues around Columbus.
A handful of popular fan theories surfaced online in the aftermath of these curious posters. The most mainstream seemed to be that the Pilots would be releasing a live album recorded when their “Clancy” tour came to Nationwide Arena in 2024.
One proponent of this take said that red and yellow was the color scheme of the “Clancy” era, while another created an anacrostic spelling “Clancy” with the names of the venues recently adorned with the band’s enigmatic posters – the Schottenstein Center, Nationwide Arena, Newport Music Hall, KEMBA Live!, Skully’s Music-Diner, and The Basement.
Meanwhile, other fans hoped the posters signified the duo’s return for another Tour de Columbus, a five-concert run at five of the aforementioned venues in 2017.
Of course, some more left-field theories emerged, including one that said, “I say they have some transmitter in the signs and it sends a signal somewhere to plot all of the locations ‘FR0M HERE’ on a map.”
Joseph and Dun will also appear on local music radio station WNCI 97.9 at 7:15 a.m. May 15, where they’re expected to share more on this announcement. The station can be streamed online, with shows running all day starting at 5 a.m.
