Woman dies after Nolan County crash

A 72 year-old Sweetwater woman died Wednesday after a single-vehicle accident in rural Nolan County, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a media release.

Dora Gail Schenkenberg was driving east on County Road 220 in a 2026 Ford Maverick pickup at 9:45 p.m., the media release said.

Skies were clear, the road dry and the posted speed limit was 6 miles per hour when she approached the FM Road 1856 intersection, just under 4 miles east of Sweetwater, the DPS said.

In their preliminary investigation, DPS troopers found Schenkenberg’s pickup failed to halt at the intersection’s stop sign, the media release said. The vehicle continued through, then struck an embankment and overturned.

Schenkenberg was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, the DPS said. She was taken to Rolling Plains Hospital where Dr. Karim Jabar pronounced her dead at 11:26 p.m.
